Despite its name this wonderful palladian mansion is not in Essex but Berkshire, not far from the River Thames.

This house and its combination of landscaped grounds and formal gardens is in the care of the National Trust. It has had a chequered but interesting past which we discovered from its knowledgeable band of volunteers: requisitioned during the last war, the grounds still had a village of nissen huts well after 1945. The house and grounds were lovingly restored by new owners during the 1950's. It was here that parts of the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley,  were filmed.

Members of the Guild were fortunate enough to spend the weekend as guests of the National Trust, bringing to life a variety of characters from the novel as part of the Trust's Jane in June (costume) season. On Saturday a wedding party was co-opted as Elizabeth and Darcy, and bemused but friendly guests allowed us to join in waving off their bride and groom. For photos, please go to the gallery.
